With so many talented artists working in our Borderlands it was difficult to choose which ones to invite to show in the First Exhibition of Hastings First Gallery in the Summer of '23. We plan to have another mixed exhibition in Summer '24.

Emma is a self-employed stained glass artist based in the Scottish Borders.
She has exhibited at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Perth Museum and Art Gallery and her work can also be seen at the Flat Cat Gallery in Lauder. Emma has created many commissioned works throughout the UK for churches, hospitals and private clients.

Luke has his studio at the nearby The Hirsel Centre For Arts and Crafts. His workshop is open to the public but, as he frequently works to commission off-site, his hours vary. If you are visiting the Hirsel specifically to see him you should make an appointment.

Rob creates gorgeously tactile pieces of furniture from Elm trees. He allows the grain and the ‘character’ of the wood to dictate its transformation into furniture that is rare and beautiful as well as being functional.

A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, Jimmy works in both watercolours and oils to express his reactions to the Borders landscapes. He is well known for his landscape paintings of vast skies in muted moody palettes.

Elaine Henderson moved to live in the Borders from Stromness in Orkney which is where she originally set up Scapa Studios, workshop and gallery. Her work was influenced at the time by the geology, weather, archeology and landscapes of the islands. She is now developing a new range of colours, textures and forms inspired by the Borders.

Julia creates unique and fabulous sandblasted designs on handblown 24% lead crystal bowls. Her studio is at the nearby Hirsel Centre For Arts and Crafts and is well worth a visit but an appointment is recommended if you are travelling especially to see her.

Multi-talented James had an early career as a musician, touring with well-known Ska bands. He now devotes his time fully to painting. He will be exhibiting his hyper-realistic paintings of marbles in our Autumn exhibition.

Denise has a long-standing love of animals of all shapes and sizes, breeds and varieties.
Her attention to detail and penchant for humour allows the character of her subjects to radiate out from the picture. Her botanical paintings show the same attention to detail.
